30th Ward may lose two schools

January 9, 2003--The Philadelphia Inquirer today carried an announcement of public hearings on the closure of two schools in the 30th Ward in its "Metropolitan News in Brief" section . The meetings will be held at the affected schools:

  • E. M. Stanton School, 1700 Christian Street
    Public Hearing: Monday, January 13

    6:30 p.m. register to speak, meeting 7:00-9:00

  • Durham School, 500 South 16th Street
    Public Hearing: Tuesday, January 14
    6:30 p.m. register to speak, meeting 7:00-9:00

Neighborhood residents at the SOSNA general meeting January 8, alerted by the legal notice in an earlier newspaper, expressed grave concerns at the lack of advance information on what would happen to the students of the two schools, and at the fact that one ward is losing 50% of the schools to be eliminated at this time. They also wanted their voices to be heard in any conversations about the re-use of the E. M. Stanton school building or site.

Area residents are encouraged to attend one or both of the hearings.
