SIGNATURE OF TIME:

• Title is a riff on musical time signatures -- his wife Emily is a musician
• Mark wants viewers to experience his exhibit via a number of the “frames” that he has set up.
• He collaborated with Schaffer on floral elements.
• The “room” on the long axis is his vision of what he might like if he had an atrium in his back yard where he could look out at the snowy landscape.
• Floral sphere replaces what would be a chair on the patio. “Flowers are more interesting than chairs at the Flower Show”.
• Note the huge staghorn fern through the circular opening and the Korean azaleas
• He has repurposed elements from several previous shows, including plants — the wisteria frutescens is from 2020. He trashpicked some corrugated metal from the Bart Hoes exhibit from the Holland show (2017).
• There’s a tiny “tillandsia room” on the east side toward the south.

The creation of a garden is the telling of a mind.
A life of journeys and experiences shared through architecture, color, texture, and plants from multiple time zones. Diverse tropical and perennial plantings present a hint of past destinations in one intimate setting. Here the vision is ever-changing as the garden transforms into its surroundings. Stems intertwine, leaves overlap, and branches discover new pathways of interest. Time is perhaps the most significant impact on a garden. What begins as a signature of the creator gradually becomes the signature of time.

Notes from Hannah's Feb 13 presentation: Time plays a role in music, in horticulture, in our lives. Mark wants us not to be afraid of a changing and uncertain future but see the potential of all these things working together.
