Safe Streets/Beautiful Blocks
20th
and Carpenter Clean-and-Green kickoff
8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Mayor
Street at 20th & Carpenter |
This
former drug corner, the site of a 1994 drive-by shooting that claimed
the life of a seven-year-old child, is within two blocks of three
churches, two schools and a senior center. It's also seen by thousands
of people every day as they ride to work on the northbound #17 bus.
For these thousands of people, it is the gateway to the South of
South neighborhood.
Thanks
to the police protection provided by the Philadelphia Police Department's
Operation SAFE STREETS, the corner's many vacant lots are ready
to be cleaned, greened, and transformed from eyesores into assets.
Northwest South Philly is poised to make it happen, in partnership with
city agencies, local churches, and area businesses.
The goal
of this cleanup is to beautify a bad corner -- and also to inspire
other area residents to take back their SAFE STREETS and turn
them into BEAUTIFUL BLOCKS.
Additional
SAFE STREETS/BEAUTIFUL BLOCKS cleanups are planned for the 30th,
36th and the 48th wards this summer. Use this
form to get on the mailing list for more information.
